There’s something big happening on Burlington’s waterfront. This summer, ECHO, Leahy Center for Lake Champlain, is unveiling a stunning new transformation to its beloved "Into the Lake" exhibit. This expansion offers visitors an immersive dive into Lake Champlain's vibrant ecosystem by introducing a 15,000-gallon freshwater aquarium, more than double the capacity of the previous tank. ECHO’s hands-on science museum is always a popular destination, and the brand-new aquarium is taking it to the next level as a must-see destination for families and nature enthusiasts.

ECHO's Into the Lake Exhibit Grand Opening

Set to open in July 15, 2025, the revamped exhibit showcases Lake Champlain's native aquatic wildlife through interactive displays and expanded habitats. Highlights include:

  • 15,000-Gallon Aquarium: Featuring iconic species such as prehistoric lake sturgeon, landlocked Atlantic salmon, American eels, and lake trout.

  • Mezzanine River Display: A new home for ECHO’s beloved snapping turtle.

  • Invasive Species Exhibit: Educating visitors on the aquatic hitchhikers threatening the lake’s balance, while a hands-on mapping station shows how these species have spread and what visitors can do to help.

  • World of Plankton: A luminous 3D sculpture accompanied by a digital interactive station that invites kids and adults alike to discover how these tiny creatures form the foundation of the lake’s food web.

  • Live Demonstrations: An AV-equipped presentation space with large viewing windows for engaging talks by ECHO’s experts and animal encounters.

A Legendary Addition: The 30-Foot Champ Sculpture & Exhibit

In 2024, ECHO unveiled a dramatic 30-foot sculpture of Champ, the legendary lake monster of Lake Champlain. Suspended above the mezzanine, the sculpture offers a stunning visual experience across all museum levels.
The sculpture was the first piece of a permanent Champ exhibit. Opening in late 2025, the more extensive exhibit will feature Champ’s cultural significance, a timeline of sightings dating back to the early 1800s, and a spotlight on Sandra Mansi’s 1977 photograph—the most compelling visual evidence to date. A digital drawing station will even let visitors animate their own lake monster.
